Product review by Shaun Kilminster: added Monday 10 May 2010
The Prestige speaker sold by Wilmslow is truly excellent. I run them with a Chord 1200 Amp, Marantz CD94 re-clocked+ Blackgate capacitors and a passive transformer volume control and it outperforms 15K studio PMCs (played with bi-amped 1200 chords).
I have a old pair of Bailey Transmission Lines with B139s etc and the Prestige Bass is not so able to shake the building and windows as the old ugly ones BUT the bass is much better controlled, the midrange is more open but less sweet. The Prestige go louder, are better controlled and do not compress after 50 watts! Further, the Prestige are half the volume in size and the shape is more funky.
The Prestige sound relatively hard and a brittle at first and it takes about 2-3 weeks before they open up. I guess the spiders are a bit stiff at first.
Without the passive Transformer volume control - you will never know how good they are. I designed my own for around 500 and got the 02 free ones from Sowters. The ones you can buy ready made are about 2500. I use USA military supply grade silver/gold switches because they are the best by far.
I have a recording studio in my house and play piano.
I recently tried the red book Chord CD player on the huge 15 bass PMC studio monitors. (I can actually afford the PMCs). The piano or voice did not sound as good as in my equipment. My brother has a full concert grand Steinway in a large hall- so I'm used to it. The mids and upper are better on the Prestige. The Prestige bass a bit thin for my liking, but still good by comparison.
For the money you cannot get better than what's on offer from Wilmslow so get smart and make a pair. The Vas on the Volt 12" is low so they only need a small box.
Cables and interconnects- sorry you generally have to pay up and buy the best. You can try and make interconnects - I use solid silver 8 strand.
I am making a pair of 250 litre 'Kilmonsters' with 15" radial bass units which I hope will be the final word on the subject. Yes and I am obsessive..
